G&G RIG Meeting: A Recap

03.07.20

The Governance and Governing Research Interest Group met online on Wednesday 24th June to discuss the importance of governance during a time of crisis.

During the meeting, Professor Ron Hill stepped down in his role as RIG Convenor after nine years, and handed over the convenorship to Lizana Oberholzer. We want to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to Ron for all of his hard work and dedication over the years, and a warm welcome to Lizana!

Read on for a recap of what happened at the meeting from our newly appointed RIG Convenor, Lizana…

"In our last RIG meeting on the 24th June 2020, which was our first meeting online, we looked at the important role governance in education plays during a time of crisis. If you were unable to attend the event, you can catch up by watching the recording of the event here.

We had a range of speakers addressing the following topics:

 1)    The importance of governance in a time of crisis – explored by Julia Skinner. Julia’s slides are available here.

2)    The importance of strong relationships with school leaders as governors – led by Derek Boyle, and his slides are available here.

3)    The importance of accountability and the governor’s role – led by Naureen Khalid. Naureen’s slides can be accessed here.

4)    Advice on effective governance at a time of crisis – evaluated by Dr Deborah Outhwaite, and her slides are available here.

5)    Professor Ron Hill led the introduction and call for papers for the BELMAS MiE Special Edition. More information about this call for papers can be found here.

During the RIG meeting, we sadly had to say goodbye to Professor Ron Hill, and Dr Deborah Outhwaite thanked him for his hard work, commitment, and dedication to the RIG. Professor Hill founded and led the RIG for 9 years, and it was always well-attended, and inspired a passion for governance in education across the sector. RIG colleagues across the sector wished Professor Hill well, and highlighted how his events were greatly valued and that they always reflected key issues well, and that he brought with him a balance of academic rigour, humour and a passion for the research area.

It was then announced that I will be taking on the role as the new RIG convenor, and Julia Skinner and Naureen Khalid agreed to deputise. The team would like to wish Professor Hill well, and we are hoping that he will continue to join us for events and support us with the special edition the team will be working on in the near future.

We are hoping to organise our next RIG event in the autumn term. Until then, we would like to wish all of our RIG members a wonderful summer, and if you are taking a break, we hope it is a restful and enjoyable time.

If you are interested in Governance in Education, or any of the topics we explored in the above, or if you would like support with your contribution to the special edition, please do get in touch. Or email:
