Education in this country has seen enormous changes over the past 25 years. Governments of all colours have become increasingly interventionist as they have sought to address what they have argued to be fundamental weaknesses in the education system. Alongside changes in the policy framework have come increasing and changing demands on educational leaders. But what have we learned? And how might we think about where we are now – and where we might be going – if we place today’s policies and practice within a longer historical timeframe.
