Gill Howland
Gill Howland has a very wide range of experience in education leadership. After working in the travel and tourism industry, she began her educational career as a secondary school teacher, then moved to further education where she led the development and expansion of new provision.
After co directing a project on 14-19 education, Gill worked in education advisory posts, before becoming Senior assistant Director of Education in a local authority, developing strategies to raise levels of achievement across all phases of education. She then took up the position of Executive Director in two Learning and Skills Councils, before being appointed to the post of Executive Pro Vice Chancellor (Academic development, widening participation, student experience) in a large modern University.
Gill was a member of the previous Government’s 14-19 External Advisory Group and a board member, then deputy chair of CILT, the National Centre for Languages. She has also been an Ofsted inspector, external evaluator and leadership mentor. She has a keen interest in education led regeneration and has chaired several multi agency groups in connection with this. Gill has a track record as a speaker at regional and national conferences, in particular relating to learning and disadvantage.
She has been a member of BELMAS for almost twenty years, and for two to three years was Chair of the Yorkshire and Humberside region.
Driven by a passion to improve educational experiences and to open up opportunities for all, Gill has a track record in improving education by bringing together schools, colleges, universities, local authorities, employers and others to create and deliver a coherent vision and strategy, centred around the curriculum and learning.
An experienced non executive director and trustee in organisations focussing on education, skills and social inclusion, Gill now works with a wide range of educational organisations across all phases.
