Dr Barbara Vann

Dr Barbara VannDr Vann has three sons and seven grandchildren. She has been a headteacher for over 20 years in two schools, leading Penair for 14 years. Her style of leadership is to enable and empower staff and students to work in a creative environment where mutual respect and support is taken for granted. The school has been graded as outstanding by the national inspection system (Ofsted).

Among other responsibilities, Dr Vann is a Governor of Truro College, and has chaired the Cornwall Association of Secondary Headteachers (2004-5 and 2009), the Cornwall Secondary Schools School Centred Initial Teacher Training steering committee (1999-2004), and the Schools’ Forum. Other diverse contributions to her region include being trustee of the Duchy Health Board, of the National Maritime Museum, and of the Hall for Cornwall.

Dr Vann is a Deputy Lieutenant of Cornwall.

Nationally, Dr Vann has been a member of the Government ‘Think Tank’ Transforming Secondary Education (2003-4), a member of the Government 14-19 Prospectus Board (2005-6) and a member of the Ministerial Task Force for the education of Gifted and Talented students (from 2005). Through her professional work and her research, Dr Vann publishes in academic journals and speaks at international conferences. Recently she has been a keynote speaker in New Zealand, South Africa and Australia, as well as in the UK.

In her BELMAS role, Barbara Vann has served for many years on the National Council, including a term as Vice-Chair and Chair. She is now an Honorary Vice President and the International Co-ordinator for the society.

A Board member of the Commonwealth Council for Educational Administration for many years, Dr Vann has been an elected member of the executive since 2008. She received a CCEAM Fellowship in 2008.

In 2010, BELMAS honoured her work – she received the Society’s Distinguished Service Award.
