Join the BELMAS Council!

04.08.22

As BELMAS looks to the future, with a new strategy and fundamental changes to the way we operate and serve our members on the horizon, there couldn't be a better time to become part of Council (and a Trustee of the charity)...

Who Are Council?

Council are a group BELMAS members who are elected by their peers to be Trustees and Directors of the organisation. They meet around 5 times per year and set the strategy and vision of BELMAS, ensuring that the organisation is focused on doing the right thing by its members. They hold the Executive Officer to account and oversee the development of the organisation.

What Roles Are Available?

We currently have two roles on Council up for grabs. Both of our current post-holders are able to stand again for election, but don't let this put you off! At BELMAS, democracy is a fundamental part of our membership organisation.

How Does It Work and What's Changed?

The first thing we have changed is that you can now self-nominate. This means you do not need a proposer or seconder, and can simply fill in the form below to put yourself forward for the role.

Once you have self-nominated, the Office will check that you are a paid member and confirm that you are able to stand in the election. There will then be a digital election over three days which will be held online with the results being announced at the Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Do I Need to Prepare Anything?

On the form, you will be asked to sign a Trustee Eligibility Section. This is a legal requirement from the Charity Commission, so please ensure you read it carefully. We also ask that you send us three uploads:

1. A photo of yourself for our website (remember to smile!)
2. Up to 500 words stating why members should vote for you
3. A short video of perhaps 30 seconds bringing your 500 words to life. We introduced this as an inclusive approach to engaging members. (Not compulsory)

And What About the Election Process?

We have recently adopted a new approach to our elections to ensure as many members as possible can vote. We also wanted to keep the election process as simple as possible while ensuring we uphold the integrity of the election.

During the process, each person will be provided with a unique link which will be sent to the email address you used when signing up to BELMAS. Once you have voted, your vote will be registered and you will be unable to vote again.

What Happens at the AGM?

Due to the current Constitution, we will be required to announce the results of the election and ratify this decision by a show of hands.

Can I Nominate Myself If I Am An International Member?

Of course, there is nothing stopping you being on Council. We will do everything we can to ensure you can engage digitally in any of our meetings. If you do wish to be present at meetings in the UK, please note that we will only provide expenses from a port of entry in the UK.

We will also be required to make further checks that you are able to be a Director of a UK company and Trustee of a UK Charity.

Where Can I Find Out More?

If you would like to find out more information, please email Ryan Beasley, Executive Officer of BELMAS at ryan@belmas.org.uk or alternatively you can schedule a 30 minute MS teams call with him using Calendly by clicking here.

Don't forget! Nominations CLOSE on Friday 19th August at 4pm.
