CEPALs RIG Meeting

The meeting will be at the University of Nottingham, Highfield House (Room A11) - on the University Park Campus. (Travel details will be provided to those who register.)

There will be tea/coffee from 10.30am - formal proceedings commence at 11am.

Dr Ruth Boyask (University of Plymouth and BERA Social Justice SIG Convenor) will be presenting. There is a session abstract below - and here is a recent article by Ruth (pdf) that raises several of the issues she will be discussing in her presentation. We hope to have a respondent in the session with experience of teaching in Swedish Free Schools.

Session title:  Reflections on social justice in the contradictory sites of privatised schooling

Abstract: Educational research has largely responded to the privatisation of schooling with critique. This critique is justified in light of weighty evidence that shows privatisation is correlated with social fragmentation and exacerbating social inequalities. However, faster than educationists critique privatisation, education is privatised. In this seminar I invite reflection on how educationists committed to social justice position themselves in respect of privatised schooling. Is our only position that of the critic, or should we be engaging with the new frames of reference for schooling?  The seminar draws upon research from several different projects that have focused upon educational sites where the protagonists have sought to make compromises between the pervasive values of the schooling market and their own internal commitments to equality and democracy. Seminar participants will be asked to consider under what conditions, if any, privatised forms of schooling might be co-opted towards equitable social ends?

In the afternoon there will be our usual, short, business meeting - much of this will focus on plans for the June two day meeting (5/6th June - University of Nottingham) - more details to follow, but please save the dates.

Lunch will be provided.
