Researching Leadership Preparation and Development

University of Nottingham

Monday 17th November 2014

Time: 10am - 4pm

There is global interest in the preparation and development of educational leaders but great variation in the extent and nature of provision and the degree to which it is mandatory for leaders to be trained and the ways in which governments, schools and other actors contribute to leadership development policy and practice. Research in this area is much needed. Relevant research questions include:

What factors influence decisions to introduce, or modify, leadership preparation or
development opportunities?

  • What factors influence decisions to introduce, or modify, leadership preparation or
    development opportunities?
  • Which group(s) are being targeted or served by leadership development initiatives, and why?
  • How do leadership development activities support distributed leadership structures and processes in schools and colleges?
  • What is the impact of different kinds of leadership preparation or development activities
    on participants and their organisations?
  • What is the relationship between leadership preparation and development and appointments to headships and other senior positions?
  • What is the impact of leadership preparation or development on school/college and student outcomes?

Over the past three years BELMAS has funded a number of small-scale research projects on aspects of leadership preparation and development in education. The purpose of this seminar is to present findings from, and enable discussion of, five of these projects.  Presentations will focus on emotional support through headteacher networks, school-university partnerships, leadership in schools with a religious character, the impact of NCTL programmes, and the development of leaders in further education.

It is also hoped that this meeting will lead to the establishment of a BELMAS Research Interest Group (RIG) in this important area.
