Venue: Westwood Campus, University of Warwick
Date: Thursday 26th May
Time: 11:00 - 15:00
Systems Leadership Development

Interested in Systems Leadership Development ? This meeting is free to attend and open to members and non-members.

The Leadership Preparation and Development Research Interest Group (RIG) was launched last year with a keynote talk by Professor Tony Bush. Please click here for the talk with slides attached. The next session took place on Monday 9th November 2015 at the University of Warwick.  This enabled us to discuss as a group how we choose to collectively go forward with our Research Interest Group, and whether or not we want to consider some publications from our research in this area. To see the abstracts discussed on the day, please click here

The meeting on the 26th May will focus on researching the professional development needs of the several thousand ‘system leaders’ now working as consultants on school to school support in a ‘self- improving’ school system. This has so far not received any long-term detailed consideration. It will be of particular interest for colleagues already working in system leader roles, and/or Research- Engaged Schools and Joint Practice Development CPD initiatives.  Although the focus will be on English schools, it will also have relevance to the international community for all colleagues working in policy environments of decentralised administrative structures and high stakes accountability.

The meeting will comprise a lead presentation, followed by discussion and agenda-setting for future meetings, including publication outputs for Management in Education Journal.

Lead presentation:  Using consultancy research in system leadership development: Paul Close, former Course Leader, MA Educational Leadership, Sheffield Hallam University

This presentation is drawn from a paper soon to be published online in the April issue of the School Leadership and Management Journal. Copies of which will be available at the meeting. The presentation:

  • Draws on a review of consultancy research to set a future professional development agenda for system leader development consisting of 6 areas of enquiry and propositions for action.
  • Considers practicalities and challenges of implementing the agenda in a school-led system.
  • Makes proposals for follow up research for testing out the agenda with stakeholder groups of system leaders, strategic partners and school clients in Teaching Schools Alliances.
