Kay Fuller, Pontso Moorosi, Joan Smith, Saeeda Shah

Following a meeting of the co-convenors at the University of Leicester in November 2012, this GL Research Interest Group was launched at the Institute of Education, London on April 23rd 2013. The event was well attended by 23 delegates from the various regions of England. There were also delegates from the Republic of Ireland and a visiting scholar from China.

Marianne Coleman gave the keynote presentation that detailed her research journey over twenty years. Marianne ended by noting a number of possible areas for particular future interest.

  • What do we mean by feminism? How will it survive its negative connotations?
  • What are the experiences of younger women leaders and potential leaders? How different are they?
  • How do we research intersectionality?
  • How do we develop research on masculinities?
  • How can we use our research to bring about change?
  • How do we explore gender and leadership issues across cultures?

(Marianne Colemans presentation is available to view in the GL RIG document library)

There followed five presentations by:

  • Saeeda Shah, Victoria Showunmi and Tamjid Mujtaba - Mapping Women Academics’ Careers in Pakistan
  • Julia Ibbotson - Talking the Walk: should CEOs think more about sex?
  • Justine Mercer - Responses to Rejection: the experiences of six women early career researchers in the Education department of an English university
  • Joan Smith - Student teachers' leadership aspirations
  • Maria Kaparou - The professional journey of female secondary school principal leadership: evidence from a small-scale study in Athens, Greece

There was some discussion about what we hoped to gain from the group. The points raised will be discussed further at the meeting to be held during the BELMAS conference. Further activity will be discussed at the BELMAS conference in July.
