Update - Gender and Leadership Research Interest Group

19.01.15

The co-convenors of the BELMAS Gender and Leadership RIG met in December 2014 to discuss ways forward for the group. Here is an update for you of our emerging plans.

Events – seminars and conferences
  1. Dr Victoria Showunmi and Dr Karen Edge and are liaising with respect to a seminar planned to take place in London during the current academic year. The focus will be the ESRC funded ‘Young Global City Leaders: Building an evidence base in London, New York and Toronto to support the next generation of school leadership innovation’ research project http://www.esrc.ac.uk/my-esrc/grants/RES-061-25-0532/read. Details to follow.
  2. Dr Victoria Showunmi and Dr Saeeda Shah and are planning a seminar on the work they have been doing in Pakistan.  The focus of the work is on gender and leadership. The seminar would include contributions from some of their colleagues from the universities in Pakistan.  This is likely to take place in early October 2015 to accommodate colleagues from Pakistan.
  3. Dr Joan Smith is planning to organise a GL conference at the University of Leicester in the Autumn term 2015-16.
  4. Dr Judith Harford has invited the GL group to an event to be hosted by University College Dublin. We are hopeful that this might be possible in the academic year 2016-17.
  5. The deadline for abstracts for the BELMAS conference www.belmasannualconference.org.uk to be held 10-12 July 2015 at Wokefield Park has been extended to 23rd
  6. The biennial Women Leading Education conference will be held between August 30 to September 4, 2015 in New Zealand.
Research opportunities
  1. We forwarded details about a call for tenders by the Leadership Foundation to research the ongoing careers of the Aurora Programme alumni. We understand there were 49 bids.
  2. The co-convenors are currently considering a potential collaborative research project that could focus on women academics in the field of educational leadership. It is likely to be a collaborative ethnography.
Publications
  1. A call for papers has been passed on for dissemination. The Journal of Education and Training  put out a call for papers for a special edition focussing on gender and education in a neo-liberal context. They would be delighted if any members of the network would consider submitting a paper. Here is the link http://www.emeraldgrouppublishing.com/products/journals/call_for_papers.htm?id=5925
  2. Some group members are contributing to a forthcoming book as a celebration of the work of Dr Marianne Coleman to be published by Peter Lang. The book Gender and Leadership: Women Achieving Against the Odds, edited by Dr Kay Fuller and Dr Judith Harford, is due for publication later this year.

Dr Kay Fuller also has a mailing list for this RIG. If you would like to be removed permanently from the list please contact Dr Kay Fuller - kay.fuller@nottingham.ac.uk.
If you know people who might be interested in this research group and would like to be added to our distribution list we will be happy to include you as professional colleagues working in schools, colleges and universities, as doctoral research students and as academics. We hope that you will use the list to inform us and each other about ongoing events, research and publications associated with gender and leadership.

Please also check the website regularly for updates.

Kind regards

Dr Kay Fuller
