Welsh Conference takes place

The Welsh conference of the UK Education Review was held in Llandrindod Wells on 12-13 June 2018. There were 29 participants from all parts of Wales and representing many aspects of education in that country. The Welsh Government, Estyn, the Education Workforce Council, schools, professional associations, Regional Consortia and the newly established National Academy for Educational Leadership were all represented, alongside academics working in policy and leadership from inside and outside Wales. The conference was in a similar workshop format to that which was successful at the Scotland conference.  It was informed by two overview keynote papers which provided frameworks for analysing developments in Wales, one by Professor Alma Harris and Dr Michele Jones of the University of Bath, the other by Professor David Reynolds of the University of Swansea. These were complemented by four presentations by Welsh educational leaders on key themes: Claire Morgan of Estyn; Ann Keane, formerly Estyn Chief Inspector and Chair of the Shadow Board of the National Academy for Educational Leadership; Debbie Harteveld Managing Director of the EAS Consortium; and Liz Brimble and Karen Evans of the Education Workforce Council. These papers and presentations will be placed in the Document Library shortly and further material will be added as the project proceeds. The next conference will be held in Birmingham on 25-26 September 2018, with a conference following in Northern Ireland in December and a UK conference in 2019 reviewing the issues and findings that have emerged from the four country conferences.
