We delighted to invite you to the relaunch event from the Race and Leadership Research Interest Group, entitled ‘Global Imperatives for Race and Leadership in Education’.
Join Co-Convenors, Stephen Francis, Claire Stewart-Hall, Olayinka Ogunnusi, and Viv Grant, as they relaunch the RIG and share details of the RIG’s plans for the year ahead.
We’re delighted to announce that the guest speaker for the event is International Consultant, Associate Professor and Equity & Human Rights Campaigner, Professor Gus John.
Professor John brings a transformative body of work to the topic of Race and Leadership in Education. Specifically, he has been an unrelenting force in the areas of racial justice, educational policy, educational reform, supplementary schooling and anti-racism.
The session is open to everyone, from Early Career Race Researchers and K-12 Educators, to Lecturers, Academics and Practitioners. We hope you can join us.

Gus John

International Consultant, Associate Professor and Equity & Human Rights Campaigner, Professor Gus John’s writings encompass reports, journalism and a variety of non-fiction books, including in 2023 ‘Don’t Salvage the Empire Windrush’ and ‘Blazing Trails: Stories of a Heroic Generation’, both published by New Beacon Books.
He formed the first supplementary schools in Handsworth, Birmingham, worked at The Runnymede Trust, and was the first Black Director of Education in Hackney.
A University of Oxford Graduate and repeatedly honoured internationally for his tireless advisory work in racial justice, Professor John was named as one of 100 Great Black Britons of all time. His co-authored 1971 book ‘Because They’re Black’ won the Martin Luther King Memorial prize.
