In this talk Helen will examine the meaning of a research project/career, and consider what it means to locate your research within a field of study and practice. Specifically, she will focus on the emerging or early years of a research project/career, and how agency interplays with the structuring context of the complexities of your professional work (along with wider issues of your personal lives and the national/international situation in which you are working). A number of key points will be raised, where she will examine the role of the learned society in general and BELMAS in particular. Helen will base this on my own experiences, along with my supervision of 38 doctoral projects that have impacted on the professional working lives of graduates. This will then generate an agenda for discussion where you will be able to raise issues for yourselves and for BELMAS.
