We are currently seeking three new Trustees to join our Board. If you are passionate about educational leadership and committed to supporting BELMAS, we encourage you to stand in our 2025 elections.

About the Board of Trustees

The BELMAS Board comprises 16 Trustees, including:

  • 14 Elected Members
  • 2 Co-opted Members
  • 2 Editors-in-Chief of our journals: Educational Management Administration & Leadership (EMAL) and Management in Education (MiE)

Within the Board, BELMAS appoints a Chair and four Vice-Chairs:

  • Vice-Chair for Awards, Bursaries & Grants
  • Vice-Chair for Conference
  • Vice-Chair for Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI)
  • Vice-Chair for Finance & Risk

Eligibility:
Any current and active BELMAS member may stand for election, provided they meet the criteria for becoming a Charity Trustee.

Criteria for eligibility of becoming a Charity Trustee


Time Commitment & Responsibilities

Trustees are expected to actively support and advocate for BELMAS throughout their term. Key commitments include:

  • 4–5 Board meetings per year
  • Participation in at least one sub-committee (3–5 meetings annually, plus additional support as needed)

Core responsibilities:

  1. Uphold the duties of a Charity Trustee
  2. Help define and steer BELMAS’s strategic direction
  3. Represent the interests of all members
  4. Engage with BELMAS meetings and committees
  5. Submit reports to the Board as required
  6. Promote and support BELMAS events and initiatives
  7. Oversee legal, compliance, policy and financial matters
  8. Adhere to BELMAS’s values, policies and the Nolan Principles
  9. Support decisions made through BELMAS’s democratic processes

All specific duties and the Trustee Code of Conduct are set out in the By-Laws. Trustees serve a three-year term, with a maximum of two consecutive terms.

Preparing Your Self-Nomination

To complete your nomination, you will need to provide:

  • Two forms of ID (for Charity Commission and banking requirements)
  • A profile photo for the website
  • Up to 500 words explaining why members should vote for you
  • Up to 500 words outlining your motivation and the skills you bring

Election & Voting Process

Voting is simple and secure. You will receive a unique voting link via email—please do not share this link.

Voting method: Single Transferable Vote (STV)
You will rank candidates in order of preference, including the option to vote for Re-Open Nominations (RON).

What is RON?
RON allows voters to request a fresh election if they feel the current candidates do not represent their interests. For example, if RON ranks third in a five-seat election, only the top two candidates are elected, and the remaining seats are reopened for new nominations.

  • Tuesday, 16th September 2025 | 11:00–12:00 (UK Time) – EDIT* This session is no longer available
  • Thursday, 18th September 2025 | 13:00–14:00 (UK Time)

🗳️ Online Voting

  • Opens: Monday, 22nd September 2025 at 10:00 (UK Time)
  • Closes: Sunday, 5th October 2025 at 23:59 (UK Time)

📣 Results Announcement

  • Date: Wednesday, 8th October 2025
  • Channels: Via email and BELMAS social media

If Elected

🧭 First Board Meeting

  • Date: Tuesday, 21st October 2025
  • Time: 09:00–11:30 (UK Time)
  • Format: Online

🌟 Strategic Away Day

  • Details: To be confirmed at the October Board Meeting
  • Expenses: Hotel and travel covered
  • International Members: Option to join online or receive travel from UK port of entry

Important Information for Non-UK Nationals

Please note that non-UK nationals must be eligible to serve as a trustee in the UK. Eligibility requirements are set by the Charity Commission and may vary depending on your residency status and legal background.

BELMAS is committed to supporting international members on the Board. If elected, you will have access to:

  • Digital participation options for all meetings and events
  • Reimbursement of reasonable travel expenses from your UK port of entry, should you choose to attend in person
