Who sits on the Board of Trustees?

BELMAS has 14 Trustees which are made up of:

  • 12 x Elected Members
  • 2 x Editor-in-Chief of BELMAS Journals (EMAL & MiE)

Within this, BELMAS internally appoints a Chair and 4 x Vice-Chairs which are:

  • Vice-Chair Awards, Bursaries & Grants
  • Vice-Chair Conference & Events (Currently Vacant)
  • Vice-Chair EDI
  • Vice Chair Finance & Resource

Anyone can be elected to the Board of Trustees, providing they have current and active membership and that you meet the criteria for eligibility of becoming a Charity Trustee.

What are the time commitments and responsibilities?

While there are between 4 & 5 Board meetings per year, this is an active role that advocates, supports and champions BELMAS on an ongoing basis.

In addition to the Board meetings, there is an expectation for each Trustee to sit on at least one sub-committee which is a minimum of 3-5 meetings per year plus additional support between meetings.

General responsibilities of Trustees include:

  1. Act as a responsible Trustee of the registered charity of BELMAS.
  2. Responsible for setting the strategic direction of BELMAS.
  3. Represent the interests of all members of BELMAS.
  4. Chair, attend, observe and engage with BELMAS committee, board and general meetings as required by the Constitution, By-Laws and Board of Trustees.
  5. Produce reports to the Board of Trustees as necessary.
  6. Actively and positively promote, engage with and support all BELMAS work and events.
  7. Take responsibility for legal, compliance, policy and finance matters of the organisation.
  8. Uphold the values, policies and constitution of the organisation and always abide by the Nolan Principles.
  9. Champion decisions made within the democratic processes of the organisation.

All specific duties and the Trustee Code of Conduct are set out in the By-Laws. Each term of office is three years, with a maximum of terms permitted.

What do I need to prepare to self nominate?

In the self-nomination form we ask you to provide the following:

  • Two forms of ID for Charity Commission purposes.
  • A Picture for our website.
  • A maximum of 500 words of why members should vote for you.
  • A maximum of 500 words of why you want to be on the Board and what skills you will bring.

How does voting work?

Voting is easy! Prior to the election, you will receive a link from the BELMAS Office. This will be YOUR unique link, so please do not share it with anyone else. When you click on this link you will be able to vote, ranking candidates in preference order (including Re-Open Nominations, also known as RON).

Who is RON?

Re-open nominations is a metaphorical person who appears on the ballot. It gives the voter the opportunity to ask BELMAS to re-open the entire election process for new candidates if they don’t believe those standing in the election are someone they’d like to vote for.

For example, as we have five positions available, if RON finishes third in the vote, then the top two candidates would be elected and BELMAS would re-start the election process to fill the last three spaces in the hope that new candidates put themselves forward. It gives the electorate options outside of the election if they are not happy.

What is Single Transferrable Voting?

Instead of placing crosses next to your four favourite candidates in a “first past the post” model, you are asked to rank as many candidates as you like in order of preference. The system is designed to maximise your preferences, by reallocating your single vote where it is not needed from your higher preference candidate – if they are elected, or if they are knocked out – towards your lower preference candidates. This is called the surplus. There is a helpful video explaining STV here.
